Eighteen
The sun was high and the morning sky was free of any clouds. Eva paid by card for a hotel breakfast and ate precisely half of it. She took the other half out of the hotel café wrapped in napkins and stuffed in her handbag, along with a small bottle of juice from the reception vending machine. To ensure a peaceful night of sleep, she had decided to down half a bottle of lukewarm white wine just before bed. The problem was that once she’d drunk half, she needed the other half to finish the job. Finally, Eva forced herself to leave a glass in the bottle before she packed it in. Including the one-glass bottle she had at Lewisham, she’d still managed to put away a whole bottle by herself, so now she felt in need of another one of her purging morning runs. But there was no opportunity for running around here. Eva would just have to endure the post-wine feeling of being strained and a little fed up. She had plenty of reasons to feel strained. She crossed the long walk of the empty car park and arrived at the Egomobile which was parked against the fence in a distant corner. Dan‘s eyes were bleary from a lack of good sleep. He rubbed them and looked again.
“You got drunk, didn’t you?”
“Shows, does it?”
“You’re still gorgeous, but yes. You’ve got that tired and pissed off thing going.”
“Maybe you’re just clairvoyant.”
“Could be. Do you know what I am?”
“Tired and pissed off.”
“See. We’re in the wrong business. We should start a stage show.”
“I thought you already did last night.”
Dan winced. “You’re never going to forgive me, are you? You really are something.”
“Is Fenton okay? I’ve got some food here for you boys. And a bottle of juice. He needs to drink.”
“He needs to piss too. I had to baby-sit the little freak last night. It’s like having an unwanted child, Eva. How long do we have to keep this guy tied up?”
“Don’t blame me, Dan – you brought him into this! We should get rid of him this afternoon. We just need some more information first, then we can go back to DI Rowntree with the facts, and some kind of statement from Charlie Rowntree.”
“We know where the brother is holed up. That would be enough for Rowntree, right?”
“You said he wanted us to bring him home.”
“He wanted us to try.”
“So let’s try. Let’s confront him with the mess he’s made.”
Eva looked at Dan, and then turned towards the hunched wreck of a man occupying the boot space. “But I want more than that now. Charlie Rowntree’s mixed up in something very bad here, something sinister. So is Fenton here. And I want to know what it is. Go on, Dan. Go and get some breakfast.”
“That’s okay. I can eat what you brought out for us. It’s enough.”
“Take a hint, Dan. Take a shower. You need one.”
“I love you too, baby.”
Eva waited until Dan was crossing the empty car park before she picked up the silver pistol and rolled it in her palm.
